Fly-in Breakfast

For the first time in a lot of years Chapter 383 had a regular fly-in pancake breakfast. It turned out to be a nice sociable affair with the weather a little on the cool side so we couldn't open the hangar door and dine in the fresh air. Even with minimal advertising we did serve about 85 people who came out to enjoy the sunny spring day.

RC Spring Fling

RC modelers came out to enjoy a day of flight at the airport. They used the south ramp as their runway and flew both piston and jet types all day long. Although the weather was a mite cool they enjoyed sunshine throughout the day.

Air Show 2005

Friday afternoon preparations for serving lots of breakfasts on Saturday morning. All the planes are out of the hangar and we now have seating for a couple of hundred at a time. Now for some good weather....
Wow! 5:45 a.m. and the balloons are up and away. These guys really are early birds.

And here are the early crew members getting their breakfast before heading out to their jobs. The place is pretty empty an hour before the gates open. The day will be under way before you know it.

The breakfast crowd. Lots of people showed up to dine on pancakes and porkies in our Chapter hangar on Saturday and Sunday. It must be the top secret recipe that keeps them coming back every year.

Airshow Headquaters/Chapter breakfast makes for a crowded scene at Hangar 22 during airshow time. Sure it's busy, but that's the way it should be during this action-packed two days in June.

Here's the C-47 that was to haul the parachutists for their daily performances at the show. It managed to get the job done for the pre-show event Friday night, but developed engine trouble the next day--trouble that meant an engine removal for overhaul before it could leave Manitowoc for home.

Ordinarily you don't think of Manfred Radius as being known for a clown act but here he is as "fan man" working his way along the flight line. I suppose this is one way to fill in the idle time between sailplane performances.

It looks like the Hay Brothers still haven't been able to get their ornithopter into the air. It may be related to the lack of acceleration on the takeoff roll.

Here's another bunch of people out to get stiff necks from looking straight up into the sky to watch airplanes. How come you have to sit way up front to see something that's happening straight up from where you are?

Customer Appreciation Day at Lakeshore Aviation brought out a lot of our 383 members to enjoy brats, burgers and the trimmings. Curt Drumm thanked all for showing up and the folks from AvFuel donated some small prizes for the group to take along as souveniers of the event. Even though the weather was a little cool (in the 50's)at least it wasn't raining so the hangar door could be left open to enjoy the view.

John and Rose Dorcey from the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame presented a fascinating talk on early aviation history for our May Chapter meeting. It turns out that we have a number of unique individuals who shaped the early days of flight--some who advanced knowledge and some who, for the lack of a better term, were a step beyond eccentric. Nonetheless, they were all interesting characters.

We had a nice turnout of 50+ members and guests and all enjoyed the presentation.

The end of a successful flight. Brian Bronson finally got around to taking his dad for an airplane ride. Dick has been waiting for this ride ever since Brian got his private ticket last fall.

Brian started flying lessons a couple of years ago and has accumulated most of his time in a good old taildragger. He is presently looking for an airplane to buy and the Citabria is high on the list of favorites. He currently rents this machine down in Waukesha.

Well, the fly-out to Shawano finally made it. The afternoon forecast looked a little dicey but the morning was good enough for the flight. Some ten folks from Manitowoc made the trip to enjoy breakfast at Perkins and here's living proof. From left to right are Rick Steinhardt, Don Wunsch (taking a break from working on his RV-6A), Chuck Haataja and Ralph Schleis. Julie Hartlaub was there also standing behind the camera to get this shot.

In a rare serious moment, our outgoing officers are pictured at what will be their last business meeting since our December meeting is the annual Christmas potluck dinner. Left to right, we have President Gary Huempfner, Treasurer Gary Pech-Kortbein and Secretary Helen Swetlik- Kodet. Our Vice-President has already fled the area to spend the winter in Arizona. New officers elected at this meeting are: Curt Drumm, President, Julie Hartlaub, Vice President, Al Forner, Treasurer and Kevin Wehner, Secretary. These new folks will start running the show in January, 2005.
